Billy Myers Whitetail Hunt

BILLY MYERS - GIBBON GLADE WHITETAIL HUNT BY:    LEON BLEW

BILLY MYERS IS A 17 YEAR OLD SENIOR AT NEW OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL. HE LIVES WITH HIS MOTHER, TONYA AND HIS SISTER AMANDA IN MCSHERRYTOWN, PA. HE IS AN AVID PITTSBURG STEELERS FAN AND LOVES TO PLAY SOCCER. BILLY WAS A VERY GOOD SOCCER PLAYER UNTIL HIS LEUKEMIA WAS DISCOVERED IN 2009. BILLY HAS GONE THROUGH A VAST ARRAY OF TREATMENTS FOR HIS LEUKEMIA AND HAS HAD SOME SET BACKS FROM TIME TO TIME. HE HAS HAD OVER 500 INJECTIONS SINCE LEARNING OF HIS DISEASE. BILLY IS VERY QUIET UNTIL YOU GET TO BE AROUND HIM FOR AWHILE, HE THEN BECOMES A JOKESTER AND WILL ALSO TALK ABOUT HIS DISEASE TO HELP OTHERS. HE HAS THE BEST ATTITUDE AND A GREAT PERSONALITY. HE MADE A BELIEVER OUT OF ME WHEN HE STATED THAT HE WILL BEAT LEUKEMIA. WITH HIS DESIRE AND ATTITUDE HE WILL DEFINITELY SUCCEED.

I GOT TO MEET BILLY AND TONYA AFTER TONYA CONTACTED ME UPON HEARING ABOUT MOPA THROUGH BILLY'S CASEWORKER AT HERSHEY MEDICAL CENTER. ARRANGEMENTS WERE MADE TO INTERVIEW BILLY AND GET THE PROCESS GOING IN SECURING AN ADVENTURE FOR BILLY. DURING THE SUMMER OF 2011 BILLY CAME TO DANIEL BOONE ROD & GUN CLUB FOR SOME SHOOTING AND SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS. WE SHOT 22, 30-06, TRAP AND CROSSBOW. HE HAD A GREAT TIME AND WE FOUND THAT HE WAS A PRETTY GOOD SHOT. BILLY'S HUNT STARTED ON THE MORNING OF OCTOBER 21ST WITH THE 4.5 HOUR DRIVE TO GIBBON GLADE, PA. GIBBON GLADE WHITETAILS IS OWNED BY CHRIS HARBERT. CHRIS HAS SUPPLIED PREVIOUS HUNTS AND ACCESS TO HIS PROPERTY FOR WHITETAIL HUNTS FOR THE YOUTHS OF MOPA. CHRIS IS A BIG SUPPORTER OF OUR ORGANIZATION AND ALONG WITH HIS STAFF AND GUIDE, MIKE HARMON, THEY DO A FANTASTIC JOB OF PUTTING OUR YOUTHS ON EXCEPTIONAL DEER STANDS. CHRIS HAS BUILT SPECIAL STANDS ON HIS PROPERTY TO ACCOMMODATE THE FAMILIES AND THE YOUNG HUNTERS THAT COME FROM MOMENT OF PEACE ADVENTURES.

UPON ARRIVING AT THE RANCE AROUND 1:30 PM ON FRIDAY OCTOBER 21ST, WE WERE MET BY OUR CAMERA CREW (GREG KRICK AND ROBERT SHORES), CHRIS TOLD EVERYONE WHO WANTED TO GO ALONG TO GET READY AND WE WOULD HEAD OUT TO THE EVENING STAND ABOUT 2:30PM. AS WE ARRIVED AT OUR STAND, THE DEER WERE ALREADY MOVING THROUGH THE AREA. AFTER GETTING THE CAMERA GEAR SET UP WE GOT EVERYONE INTO THEIR POSITION AND SAT BACK AND WAITED FOR THE ACTION TO START. IT DID NOT TAKE VERY LONG BEFORE DEER STARTED TO MOVE INTO OUR AREA. THE STAND IS PLACED BETWEEN TWO BEDDING AREAS AND THE DEER CONSTANTLY MOVE THROUGH THIS AREA. AT ABOUT 3:00PM SOME DOES WITH FAWNS WORKED THEIR WAY AROUND US BUT WE WERE AFTER A MATURE BUCK. MIKE TOLD US TO JUST KEEP WATCHING AND IF ENOUGH DOES CAME THROUGH THE BUCKS WOULD NOT BE TOO FAR BEHIND. TRUE TO HIS WORD A NICE 9 POINTER CAME IN ALONG WITH A BUCK THEY CALL CRAZY HORN, DUE TO THE WAY HIS ANTLERS ARE SHAPED. MIKE TOLD BILLY TO SHOOT ANY OF THESE BUCKS. HE WAS QUITE SURE HE WOULD SEE A BETTER BUCK SOON. AFTER WATCHING THE DOES AND TWO BUCKS WALK AWAY WE GOT SIGHT OF SOME DEER MOVING IN FROM OUR LEFT SIDE. AGAIN ALL WERE DOES AND FAWNS. A FEW MINUTES PASSED AS THE DEER WORKED THEIR WAY THROUGH AND THEN WE SAW WHAT THEY KEPT LOOKING BACK AT. A REAL TROPHY BUCK THAT WOULD SCORE IN THE 200 TO 220 CLASS. THE BUCK WORKED HIS WAY THROUGH THE BRUSH A LITTLE FARTHER AWAY THEN THE DOES BUT WE FIGURED HE WOULD GET WITHIN RANGE SOME TIME AS HE HEADED TOWARDS THE FIELDS ALONG THE TOP OF THE PROPERTY. NEXT THING WE SEE ARE ANTLERS POKING OUT FROM BEHIND A STAND OF TREES. AS ANY BIG BUCK WILL DO HE ONLY GAVE US A GLIMPSE OF HIS RACK AND TURNED AND WALKED DIRECTLY BACK FROM THE THICK BRUSHY AREA HE HAD COME FROM.

WE WERE ALL REALLY EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO SEE A BUCK LIKE THIS EVEN THOUGH HE DID NOT PRESENT A SHOT. ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATER WE CAUGHT A GLIMPSE OF A REAL NICE BUCK OUT ABOUT 75 YARDS FROM THE TREE STAND. HE WAS WORKING HIS WAY TOWARDS US. IF HE CONTINUED ON HIS CURRENT TRAIL HE WOULD PASS AT ABOUT 30 YARDS, WHERE BILLY COULD GET A GOOD SHOT. MIKE TOLD BILLY THE BUCK WOULD SCORE ABOUT 145 AND IF HE WANTED TO SHOOT HE SHOULD BE READY. THAT IS ALL BILLY HAD TO HEAR, HE WAS READY AND WHEN THE BUCK TURNED TO THE LEFT HE GAVE BILLY A PERFECT 35 YARD BROADSIDE SHOT. BILLY WAS UP TO THE TASK AS HE FIRED AND THE BUCK JUMPED UP AND ONLY WENT 40-50 YARDS BEFORE GOING DOWN. CONGRATULATIONS AND HIGH FIVES WERE GIVEN! WE ALL GOT TOGETHER AND HEADED OVER TO BILLY'S BUCK OF A LIFETIME. BILLY WAS AS HAPPY AS ANYONE COULD BE.

THE NEXT DAY WE GAVE BILLY THE CHANCE TO GO FOR A DOE WITH A CROSSBOW. CHRIS AND MIKE TOOK US OUT TO A LOCATION NEAR THE BEDDING AREAS. WE WERE IN THE STAND FOR ABOUT AN HOUR BEFORE WE SAW ANY DEER MOVING AROUND. USING THE BINOCULARS, BILLY'S MOTHER SPOTTED A DOE OUT IN FRONT OF US. THE DOE WAS COMING IN AT THE 20-25 YARD RANGE AND BILLY GOT READY. BILLY PULLED THE TRIGGER ON HIS EXCALIBUR CROSSBOW AND WE SAW THE LIGHTED NOCK HIT RIGHT BEHIND THE FRONT SHOULDER AND PASS THROUGH THE OTHER SIDE. WE WATCHED THE DOE FALL WITHIN 40 YARDS. ANOTHER SUCCESS.

AFTER TAKING PICTURES AND GETTING THE DEER OUT, WE HEADED BACK TO THE LODGE AND THE END OF OUR ADVENTURE. I KNEW BILLY WAS NOT NEARLY READY TO LEAVE. HE THANKED CHRIS AND MIKE FOR EVERYTHING THEY DID FOR HIM AND THEN TURNED TO THANK EVERYONE FROM MOMENT OF PEACE ADVENTURES. HE COMMENTED ON WHAT IT MEANT FOR HIM TO EXPERIENCE THIS ADVENTURE. BILLY IS A FIGHTER AND HAS A TERRIFIC OUTLOOK ON LIFE. HE VOWS THAT HE WILL BEAT LEUKEMIA AND I FEEL REALLY SURE THAT HE WILL DO JUST THAT.
